A gravel driveway does a lot of work on a North Canterbury property. It might carry everyday cars, delivery trucks, horse floats or farm machinery, often along the same narrow route. Whether you are building a new entrance or repairing an existing lane, the starting point is how the driveway is formed and where the water goes.
Building a new gravel driveway
For a new home, shed or lifestyle block, we start by looking at the route, ground conditions, access width and the vehicles using it. The work may include stripping unsuitable material, preparing the formation, placing suitable aggregate, shaping the surface and compacting it.
The right approach depends on the site. A short residential driveway and a long farm access track have different demands. Sorting out levels, turning areas and drainage early helps the finished driveway work with the rest of the property.
Potholes, ruts and rough access
Loose gravel alone will not necessarily solve a recurring pothole. If water keeps sitting in the same place, or the material underneath is soft, the problem can return. We assess whether the driveway needs reshaping, local repairs, fresh aggregate or more substantial base work.
- Potholes and corrugations: assess the existing material and rework the affected surface where suitable.
- Wheel ruts and soft spots: check the underlying ground and how water reaches the damaged area.
- Thin or patchy gravel: consider a top-up once the shape and drainage have been addressed.
Grading and drainage work together
A useful driveway surface sheds water instead of holding it in wheel tracks. Grading restores the shape, while drainage gives that water somewhere appropriate to go. Edges, existing drains, culverts and neighbouring land all need to be considered when planning the work.
Where the existing base is sound, grading and re-gravelling may be enough. Where the ground has failed, a deeper repair may be needed. A site assessment helps separate those two situations before money is spent on material.
